New Pick Up Times (Winter Season)

16th November 2014

New pick up times

With the nights drawing in and the precious hiking daylight hours getting shorter, we are now going to implement earlier pick-up times to ensure we get a good full day of hiking. As of this week’s hike to the beautiful Lakeland area of Langdale (see above), pick-up times are: 8:00am from Owen’s Park, 8:10am from the Students’ Union and 8:20am from North Campus (Retro Bar).

Cadair Idris Weekend Trip 3rd - 5th October 2014

23rd September 2014

The first weekend trip of the 2014-15 year is to Cadair Idris and it would be great to see some new faces as well as the regulars. Weekend trips provide excellent hiking opportunities but are also a great way to get to know other club members better. The mountain of Cadair Idris (also known as the giants chair) is at the far south of Snowdonia national park and features in numerous local legends. In addition to Cadair itself there are many other nearby hills to explore such as the Rhinogs and opportunities for forest walks.

We will leave Manchester on the afternoon / evening of Friday 3rd October and return on the evening of Sunday 5th October, with 2 nights overnight accommodation at Corris Bunkhouse (Corris Bunkhouse, Bryn Coedwig). You'll need all your usual hiking gear (see Crucial Guide) plus a sleeping bag and enough food for breakfast and lunch on both days. The price includes transport a meal on the Saturday night plus tea coffee and milk.

To book a place on this trip you will need to come and see us in the activities centre on the first floor of the students union from 12.30-13.30 weekdays. Signup for the trip will run from Monday 22nd September until Wednesday 1st October. You'll need to bring a deposit of £25 with the balance to be paid on the trip. The total cost is to be confirmed but will be no more than £50 - the more people that come the cheaper it will be so bring your friends. As with our coach hikes we aim to offer a range of hikes suitable for everybody, although it is recommended that you have been hiking with us before or have some hiking experience. If you have any questions, please come and talk to us at the union or email

Important club news

25th April 2013

As we come to celebrate the end of an exciting year of hiking with our Annual Dinner this Saturday, we are saddened to tell you about an incident that occurred on our Welsh 3000s trip last weekend.

It is with great sorrow that we can confirm the death of one of our members, Jared Maillet, on the 20th of April 2013. Jared was one of 11 members of the club taking part in the challenge, and so far as we can tell he was last seen on route from the summit of Snowdon towards Garnedd Ugain and Crib Goch. Unfortunately, it appears that he took a significant fall and his body was found by mountaineers later that morning and recovered from below Parsons Arête by Llanberis MRT with the help of the RAF. The Coroner has opened an inquest and it is expected that the more precise circumstances will emerge as a result of that process.

While Jared had only been with the club since February, he had made an incredible impression on many of us as one of the most enthusiastic hikers we had met in a long time, as well as being one of our fittest members.

We would like to thank all those who have supported and continue to support us, particularly the Students’ Union, and we hope that the club can return to normal activities as soon as possible.

We know that this news is upsetting for a lot of people and may affect your academic work, and we encourage you to consider contacting the Students’ Union Advice Service on 0161 275 8066 or the University Counselling Service on 0161 275 2864.
